Jason Atherton's third Hong Kong restaurant serves modern British cuisine in an open, tasteful setting - most critics find the food innovative and delicious, and it's an especially great deal at either lunch or brunch.

But it is the food that will win your heart. Among the half-dozen or so appetisers, the clear winner is the quail. Roasted to a beautiful pink on the inside, the poultry is juicy and well-balanced by the peach chutney – so good that I almost lick the plate.

Despite its fancy presentation, there is nothing fussy about this dish. The small cauliflower pieces add adequate crunch while the sauce is light without losing a nice hint of tartness.

A three-course meal for two including a glass of house wine each comes to around HK$1,600, which is to be expected for a dining experience in one of the city’s beautifully rejuvenated heritage sites.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Aberdeen Street Social. The atmosphere is spot on, the food is thoughtful, interesting and most importantly, delicious. I loved how special the ’What The Doctor Ordered’ cocktail was, and I’ll admit I tried the ‘How D’Ya Like Them Apples’ cocktail too which was so yummy!

The only thing they might regret is the moniker which some smartass foodies has already shortened into its acronym. Hence, you have jokers asking their friends, “have you eaten at ASS yet?”

For those who are less adventurous with their food, accessible ingredients such as sea bass, scallops, and lobster are also on offer. Chef Atherton’s take on the BLT, aptly called the “CLT” (crab, lettuce, and tomato) is a must-try, and his roasted Bream with Bouillabaisse, Saffron Aioli, and Provencal Vegetables is an example of how stunning simply cooked food can be.

The food’s presentation is absolutely exquisite, forcing us to stop a few seconds to admire the piece of work, before tasting the irresistible culinary masterpiece.

I’d say that brunch at Aberdeen Street Social is a pleasant alternative to a mass-produced hotel buffet brunch. It’s a place you can linger for hours in a comfortable, social setting and somewhere I will definitely be returning to – I need to try the dinner menu after all!

Overall, I found the food at Aberdeen Street Social very beautiful to look at. Flavour-wise, I think it could do with a bit of fine-tuning.

With great vibes and delicious food, Aberdeen Street Social should be on your to-visit list, if not now then in a few weeks when the insane queue subsides.

The food was a bit hit and miss, but I do think that with time this could become something worth making a visit to, even with that bloody steep climb.

The lunch menu is very enjoyable, with a good range of choice in the starters and the main courses, for a reasonable HK$238 for two courses, and HK$ 288 for three courses. I say it is reasonable because the food is beautifully prepared, eaten in a sophisticated setting, and tastes fabulous.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen pork empanadas on a menu…so we jumped at the chance to order this!! Like a baked dumpling/pastry. The outside pastry was perfectly browned and slightly flaky, while maintaining the pulled pork meat inside!

While the price point is higher ($1,300 for two) than nearby Soho haunts, the culinary standard, chic setting, good service and little extras (amuses-bouches at the start; petits fours at the end) makes it worth the splurge.

Some of my friends find meals at this rookie way overpriced for a supposedly casual restaurant; indeed the prices are hefty, but the food is quite sophisticated so you should it a chance!

This meal reminded me a little of another modern British restaurant, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal in London; in the sense that both restaurants are very good with presenting their food in a contemporary manner.

Their menu is varied and great for sharing with friends or for a healthy lunch between meetings.

While there were one or two wonderful dishes of our meal, the food on the whole was not that impressive while the environment was a bit noisy (that's where the social aspect comes in I guess). The service was spectacular though as the staff were attentive and knowledgeable.

The fish was delicious — crispy skin, perfect cook, the sea vegetables (such as samphire) added crunch and seasoning but the addition of the sauce (not mentioned on menu) detracted from the freshness of the dish, and I found it lacking the acidity needed for it to be enjoyable to the last mouthful.
