Still early days for this aggressively expanding Tex-Mex fast-food joint - the burritos are good, as are the salads, but as with many a Mexican spot in Hong Kong, there's something lacking.

Our burrito bowl with Angus rump steak (above, HK$98) was filling, although the Josper-grilled meat could have been more flavourful. Adding a scoop of creamy guacamole (an extra HK$18) to our bowl made all the difference — we just wished there was more of it.

The main draw here is the use of fresh ingredients and homemade sauces, resulting in generally lighter dishes. Seeing as there are two shops in Central—one smack in the middle of LKF—it looks like CM will be trying to cater to the late-night crowd as well.

With a cool shop-front and great ingredients (Aussie Angus beef, grass-fed and hormone-free!), this is definitely one to try if you’re craving a burrito!

Overall Cali-Mex delivers on it’s promise of Mexican food, California style. It was early days when we visited, so if they can improve their spice levels across the board, it’s a great spot for a quick lunch or early dinner. I will definitely be returning.

Cali-Mex certainly has a lot of potential and, given its close proximity to practically everywhere (FYI another branch is opening soon in Sheung Wan), I think it will definitely do well, once it gets its spices flowing. It’s easy, convenient and affordable – I’ll just have to make sure I order the ‘hot’ sauce next time!

If you are looking for Californian style Mexican fare and value the use of premium fresh ingredients and great flavour this is the perfect place.

I could have put a better tasting burrito together using canned ingredients at parkNshop – beans, meat chili, white rice and tortilla.  Mexican food is nowhere near authentic, exorbitantly expensive and terrible quality.

The Spinach option is quite delicious with spinach leaves sautéed with garlic, red onion, olive oil and a dash of white wine as is the Mixed Bean with refried pinto beans and black beans that are simply perfect with sour cream.  If you’re into spicy, we highly encourage choosing Salsa Bravo to up the spice factor!
