Japanese-styled Mexican? It sounds pretentious, but critics say it generally works. The food is undoubtedly pricey, but the K-Town vibe and Yardbird-influenced cuisine goes down a treat with most.

But the tostada with chicken and egg (HK$58) was misguided. It was a bit bland, and was impossible to eat neatly — it was too large for chopsticks (the only utensils provided, other than a spoon with the soup), so we had it as finger food, and ended up getting egg yolk on our hands.

You’d be surprised how these tasty small dishes can fill you up at this eatery. Idos and his team have clearly been influenced by the ultra-successful yakitori restaurant up the road in Sheung Wan with the service and style.

Budget around HK$600 per person for a reasonable meal with a drink or two – it’s not inexpensive by any means, and some of the portion sizes may come as a surprise.

With street art on the walls, modern Mexican fare on the plates and former Nobu chef Erik Idos fronting up the kitchen, this is definitely one to watch.

All in all, I think CHINO is one of my new favourite places to eat and I’m already looking forward to my next visit. It’s Mexican food eaten with chopsticks – what is there not to love?!

I’m not sure I would head all the way down to Kennedy Town just for Chino, but if I were already in the neighbourhood and fancied a quick bite, I would likely stop by again.

Chino however just seems to know the flavours that people want, the textural interplay, the occasional unexpected global ingredient, mostly Japanese.

Crispy Fish / Chipotle Kewpie / Salsa Fresca Tacos ($48 HKD or $6.20 USD). The fish tacos are lightly battered giving the fish a crispy crust topped with spicy creamy kewpie then finished with fresh salsa and slaw.
