Still early days, but critics generally like Continental's classic British offerings - the vibe is bright and airy, the menu interesting and food generally hearty and delicious.

The dishes we tried were either very good, or really unexciting. In the former category, the cep and potato pancake with griddled foie gras and sauternes jus (HK$225) was wonderfully indulgent.

We like the variety on offer at The Continental. All the dishes are solid in regards to flavour and presentation. They’re not trying to break any new culinary ground here but maybe that’s just what the neighbourhood needs – somewhere charming, easy and effective.

A fulfilling three-course dinner for two with a glass of wine each would average HK$1,500 –  given the atmospheric central setting and reliable cooking, this is not unreasonable.

All of this surprisingly comes with a more-than-reasonable price tag, especially given the restaurant’s luxe ambience, and high quality ingredients.

The results from the decor to food are fantastic. The undulating white ceiling designed by Thomas Heatherwick is thankfully still there, but the rest of the space has been cleared out.

I was also seriously impressed by the “L’Imperial” pigeon, Chef Rowley’s take on this classic French dish, served deconstructed, with pea purée, pancetta and jus-soaked croutons.

Overall, I didn’t find the food at The Continental particularly memorable, but it is nevertheless a very pleasant, sunny place to have lunch. They also retained the outside seating, so it is one of the few places in Hong Kong where you can dine alfresco.

If they manage to keep up with the food quality and service - like what we have experienced this evening - I think this one is here to stay and would be a popular spot for many.

A bit of mixed feelings from this luncheon experience. Thought the service and ambiance were both excellent but the food wasn't nearly as impressive.

A classic Dover Sole is definitely a Hungry HK must eat and we loved The Continental's version which was large, meaty, buttery, decadently full of roe and everything we would hope for in one of our favourite dishes.
