It's publicised as the 'waiting room' to 22 Ships, but many critics say Ham & Sherry serves equally good tapas, if a little more traditional. Come for the drinks or snacks though, as it isn't a dinner place.

Some may see this sort of concept as just a fad but if this sort of quality keeps up, it’ll be a Wan Chai mainstay. After all, good things come in pairs, right?

A session of snacking and sipping is not exactly cheap, but you get what you pay for – and some items, such as the salt and pepper chipirones with squid ink aioli, offer great value for the portions

However, the sobrasada (a paste made from pork sausage) and fried quail’s egg pan con ($90) better suited those who like their fermented meat a bit more on the overripe, aged-process side. The flavour was surprisingly too strong for our palate.

On a night out, Ham & Sherry probably isn’t going to be your main destination for a meal… but it isn’t intended to be. As a casual hang-out with friends over some stellar drinks and appetite-whetting bites, it’s a job well done – and in true Atherton style.

While there are just a handful of tapas dishes to nibble while you sip your Sherry, food definitely isn’t playing second fiddle here. Just think of Ham & Sherry’s menu as a carefully curated selection of Spain’s Greatest Hits.

Our meal, including a couple of cocktails in the secret back room (shhh, you didn’t hear it from me!), came to $730 between the two of us, although one of us was on the mocktails. Ham & Sherry is a fun, lively tapas bar that retains an air of tradition, with a spark of creativity.

Overall, Ham & Sherry’s food is on point, but I personally prefer the menu over at 22 Ships. Albeit, It really depends on what you’re in the mood for. If you’re looking for proper tapas, hit up Ham & Sherry.

We started off with the salt & pepper ‘chipirones’ with squid ink aioli ($68), and these were crunchy, flavourful and moreish.

We picked the beetroot salad with red onion, raspberries and crumbled goat cheese out of the three salads but it was nothing special.

Ham & Sherry is a great spot to enjoy a few snacks and pre dinner drinks or hang out with friends for cocktails and Spanish fare.

There was one seeming winner in the bunch, the bacon, a bacon that is soft and chewy with the right amount of crispiness; it did well at first, until you begin to notice its overly greasy perspiration.

My experience at Ham & Sherry pales to 22 Ships, but worth checking out the burgers and salads.  Given the team behind it – I will try going again, but am going to give them a few more weeks to work out the menu and the kinks.
