The original Parisian steak frites restaurant, critics are very impressed by Relais' Hong Kong outpost - most find the steak-fries combo delicious and reasonably priced, but some say it's just living off its famed French name.

Le Relais de L’Entrecôte brings a French tradition to Hong Kong. It’s evident in the surrounds and in the simple menu – but, most of all, you can actually taste it in that main course. And you immediately understand why a restaurant brand can get away with serving just one main for so many years and still be expanding across the globe.

A meal for two including desserts and wine comes to approximately HK$1,100, which is a reasonable price to pay considering the quality of food, friendly service, and welcoming ambience.

We liked the flavours in the sauce, but found it a smidge oily, although well mopped by the fries. On the fries, they tasted good, but had gone quite limp on our plate and weren’t as crispy as we would have preferred.

Overall, Le Relais D’Entrecote can stand proud in its success at creating a little slice of Paris in the heart of Hong Kong. The food, service, interiors and that sauce all pay the perfect homage to Monsieur de Saurs’ original and are sure to build up something of a cult following.

Priced higher than its competitors, with poorer service and no free flow fries (or tomato sauce), the new spot is banking on the rich history of the Parisian original to pull in the punters.

The meat sauce is divine, absolutely delicious, not to talk of the fries which we quickly devoured. For dessert, we could not resist the profiteroles and creme brûlée; again, it was fantastic. In short, we are convinced!

The salad and steak set menu is priced at $288 per person. Between four of us, after adding on a bottle and a half of the house red wine from the founding de Saurs family’s own vineyard, plus our desserts, coffees and teas, the bill came to $550 each – not bad for a truly Parisian experience this side of Paris!

My inital impression of the beef is that although it is lean, it is tender. I asked for rare, and it was just that. Someone on my Instagram commented that the beef looked thicker than it is in France, which I suppose is possible but I can’t say.

They serve the contre-filet steak (from the sirloin) in two rounds from a silver domed platter and those gorgeous, slightly soggy (in a good way) fries keep coming until you eventually and regretfully wave the white flag.

They are currently the one and only in Asia, but if they don't do anything about the quality of the food, this title won't last long......

Overall, the steak frites platter is marvellous, and my only complaint is that the exterior of the steak could be more char-grilled.

The meat was juicy and tender while the sauce lived up to all the hype.

I've never been to the original in Paris but I wasn't that impressed with the steak frites here. The food just tasted average and looked like cafeteria food to be honest.
