The Pawn all but breathed new life into Wanchai, and while their food is mostly overpriced gastropub fare, it matters little in such sleek, stunning surroundings.

Lunch and dinner menus change daily, with past starters including pork belly with green apple, spinach, red onion, and red wine vinaigrette.

The signature fish-and-chips is stellar and is served with their homemade tartar sauce.

We thoroughly enjoyed the hearty duck bolognese with duck confit mash (HK$225). The mac'n'cheese with Iberico ham (HK$280) consisted of macaroni in a watery cream sauce with the tiniest bits of ham and hardly any cheesiness.

Macaroni and cheese with truffle (HK$150) had a lot of cheese flavour, but was very starchy. My favourite main was the fish pie (HK$200), which had tender pieces of cod and salmon, as well as mussels, in a creamy, but not-too-thick sauce.

So, for the most part, The Pawn mark II is a complete success and lives up to all the hype. It’s a great leap forward and the new look, new menu, new concepts and deliciously innovative starters and desserts should be embraced by regulars and visitors.

Expect British gastropub (i.e. fish and chips), and great lagers on tap.

The fish's batter - which is what sets a medicocre dish apart from a spectacular one, is run-of-the-mill unfortunately.

A popular choice for elegant yet low-key receptions is this lovingly restored former pawnshop in Wan Chai.

An all-day menu of British classics is also served, including the signature bangers & mash, Scotch egg and Welsh rabbit.

Set in the restaurant's stylish, somewhat Britishly moody (read: warm), relaxed and spacious interior, the menu highlights all the best of traditional British cuisine executed with a modern finesse that truly allows the quality ingredients to shine on the plate.

The British cuisine on offer at this restaurant is more refined and lighter then the British food you might be used to... except for the fabulous fish and chip dish that everyone raves about, of course!

For now, we'll stick to bringing our friends to The Pawn for a taste of Hong Kong heritage and some mighty good desserts.

All in all, The Pawn's food is not as bad as some reviews suggest. At least the ingredients were fresh, the dishes were carefully prepared and there were flashes of brilliance here and there.

It's not the most amazing food in the world, but the atmosphere makes up for it.

Traditional English desserts like Eton Mess and Sticky Toffee Pudding are a sweet ending that will ensure you'll be back again very soon

The Pawn goes so much deeper than just bangers and mash, with prices to match - it isn't cheap as chips, but, really, what did you expect?!

Overall, I would say that my opinion of The Pawn remains unchanged: a nice place, great for drinks, but still not going to come to mind immediately as a dining destination, as only the razor clams and sticky toffee pudding approached anything that was more than just average.

So all things considered, once the plating becomes more uniform, the kinks are ironed out and those terrible cocktail names ditched, The Pawn looks on track to re-stake its claim as one of Hong Kong’s go-to dining destinations.

So yes, the prices are a little steep. Yes, the food is not really aiming at Michelin-starred ingenuity. And yes, you’re paying as much for the atmosphere as for the ingredients.

The Pawn has served its clientele for the past five years, and the thoughts that was given to each rendition was apparent with every first bite.

There were kinks in some of the dishes that needed to be ironed out, but overall, it is evident that the kitchen has put in a lot of effort into preparing these hearty, delicious British offerings.

Per their hashtag, #thewaitisover for The Pawns’s renovation but you’re still going to be fucking waiting for fuck no service and largely average food (with botanicals).  FUCK NO.

Baked grouper with pumpkin purée and pine nuts was my main course and it was delicious (6/10).

You know when you meet someone for the first time who is overtly confident in a mildly arrogant way; and you can’t put your finger on it but you feel strangely comfortable in their presence and quite drawn to them? Meet the first pub equivalent – The Pawn.

Winter is upon us Musers and this is when I love the Pawn the most – the cosiness of the décor and the comfort of those rich British classics on the menu are going to enhance my weekends a great deal over the coming months.

the pumpkin, asparagus, roasted tomato, rocket and parmesan risotto which looked good - apparently, just like it tasted!

The best thing about the Pawn though isn't the food, it's the atmosphere.
