A modern trendsetter, Yardbird initially came with endless hype, but it's more than lived up to it. Sure, there's better yakitori out there and for cheaper, but it's all about the experience here.

Like, they don't take reservations. For a restaurant located in the trendy Soho area, and one that charges a premium for yakitori, that can be daunting.

The only downside here is that the restaurant doesn't take reservations so arrive early or risk waiting for a table.

Arrive early (it opens at 6 p.m.) and perch barside for the sublimely turned-out skewers and serious drinks the Whiskey Lemonade is not to be missed.

Yardbird is a game place. Hell, even the name is cool. Wyndham Street can have the cougars, we'll be hiding out in Sheung Wan from now on with the chickens.

While this is definitely on the high side for yakitori, it is not altogether surprising given the high staff-to-customer ratio and the trendy locale.

But all in all, we were collectively bowled over by the artful and meticulous grilling that gave way to char-tinted skins and succulent flesh.

This is one of Hong Kong's hottest new casual dining spots, however beware that the noise levels are high and tables are given on a democratic first-come, first-served basis.

At the end of our meal we were more than happy with our experience - the fun atmosphere, the music, and the yummy food all combine to make Yardbird somewhere you'll want to visit again and again.

There's no denying that Yardbird is premium yakitori and if you're trying to save, this is not the place to go.

It was a fun night and the delicious food made it even better. Yardbird may not look like much on the outside but it's what's on the inside that counts right!?

Everything is done with great care here, from food (ingredients to cooking), drinks to service. How often in Hong Kong do you find competent and truly friendly service, for example?

Dinner for two will set you back over $500 each which, although pricey for what it is, isn't absurdly expensive.

May be a bit dear: One drink is never enough. Save up, eat happy.

Definitely not in terms of authenticity and understanding of traditional Japanese food, but the execution was spot on indeed bar one of their signature tsukune dish.

Now that the hype is over since they opened in 2011, I think it's worth a shout out given how the food and service are still consistently excellent.

Yardbird does a really good job of keeping their food simple, yet creatively tantalizing.

Yardbird lives up to it's hype. Pricy but worth it. Expect to spend around $1000HKD($150USD) including two alcoholic drinks on a meal for 2 for what is essentially Japanese bar food.
