Fresh Food, featuring Jamie's second, plenty of small new spots, Mayta closing up, and a royal bakery coming to town.
Just a few days left before the world’s worst descends on Hong Kong for a weekend of drunken madness, while the rest of us lock up our doors and hibernate for three whole nights. Rugby Sevens weekend is here, and it's also seemingly the perfect time for dining ventures to announce their openings. With that, let’s get into this week’s Fresh Food.
First up, the major news of the week is that Jamie Oliver will be opening his second venture in Hong Kong, after the limited success of last summer’s Jamie’s Italian (57%) in Causeway Bay. The new outlet will keep the same concept, but will take things to the dark side, this time located in TST’s Harbour City. Expect it to open sometime this summer.
Next up, also recently opened in Kowloon, Mumose, a new Thai spot on Ashley Road that puts modern twists on traditional dishes. It’s located on Ashley Road, and expect. And over in Causeway, Japan’s popular Yonekura Group has opened its first Hong Kong venture. Ebi-no-Hige is a small izakaya that focuses on specialties from the country’s region of Niiigata.
Over in Kennedy Town, Ethos on Hill Road is a new hipster-y spot that also has neighbouring designer goods and culture events stores. It serves a small Italian menu, and seems to be catering to HKU students. And popular Soho Sichuan restaurant Chilli Fagara (65%) has expanded with a second location, just a block or so away from its original, this time on Old Bailey Street.
We messed up a couple weeks back, with news that Braza had taken over from the recently closed Comfort. It will actually be to replacing Peruvian restaurant Mayta, which has also sadly closed down, being one of Dining Concepts’ more decent ventures.
And this isn’t really restaurant news, but the Royal Touch Bakery has expanded to Hong Kong, with its first outlet at Harbour City. For those ignorant few, it comes from Carolyn Robb, who was Charles and Diana’s personal chef for over a decade, and catered to their princely kids as well. Expect refined British baked bites.
Finally, after a fire all but shut it up late last year, Lantau beach favourite Mavericks (73%) has bounced back strong. They’re launching a new menu this Easter, this time from chef Neil Tomes of Wan Chai burger spot Beef & Liberty (72%).
